For nearly 40 years Bill Cunningham was the fashion photographer for The Times where he captured the style of real women on the streets of New York. He had a column in every Sunday edition of The Times called On The Street and he first launched it in 1978.

He was famous for his smile when he captured those perfect fashion shots and today the fashion industry mourns the loss of a true legend who represented the fashion style of New York City and he has managed to touch a million hearts over a long period of time. For Bill Cunningham instead of wanting to find just the famous people and document them, he captured those who were influenced by fashion in a much more authentic way.

Other than this he was also the subject of a documentary, Bill Cunningham New York where we saw his low-key life behind the lens. From the documentary one could see how humble he was a person and why everyone loved him so much even after being named a Living Landmark by New York Landmarks Conservancy and Legion d’Honneaur in France.

Of all his photography there is one picture that will always be in our memories the most and this is one reason why the photographer always said: “The best fashion show is definitely on the street. Always has been. Always will be.” This pictures shows the best contrast of high-class society and the local subway in NYC.

Before Bill Cunningham became famous for his street style photography for The Times, he loved the city’s buildings and streetscapes where he showed them off in a playful series of images that was part of a project he worked on between 1968 and 1976 called Facades. In this instead of capturing stylish strangers he used models which were most often his muse along with a fellow photographer, Editta Sherman. He used the city as a backdrop and made them wear vintage costumes where the clothes and the poses of his models tend to reflect the buildings behind them.
